CONSTRUCTION – Solid: Solid hardwood is just as it says, Solid. It is one piece of wood. Normally solid hardwood comes ¾” thick and can be 2-1/4” up to 9” wide. You will also see solid hardwood 5/16” thick. This is less common and not as popular as it used to be.
Engineered: This type of wood floor is constructed with a Hardwood veneer attached to a plywood base. The thickness of the veneer will vary as will the number of plys in the base. This type of flooring is becoming much more popular as the technology has improved. An engineered wood floor is more stable than a solid product, is factory finished so a more durable finish can be applied, and takes less time to install.

INSTALLATION – Solid wood need to be nailed to a wooden subfloor. It then needs to be sanded and finished on site. This will limit its use in certain areas such as a concrete floor. Engineered wood flooring can be nailed down as well, but it can also be glued down and floated. There is no sanding or finishing required with an engineered floor allowing for a faster and cleaner installation.
